I’m a planner, I have a whiteboard at home with a day’s plan of things to do, I plan my training a week ahead of schedule as I do all my clients, I plan my following week in regards to my time off once I have seen my last client for the week. I like to plan everything.

This gives me daily goals and you won’t find many successful who didn’t plan but things don’t always of course go to plan so having the ability to adapt is also just as important, truth be told I struggle with that.

Now as I said my training is no different I know every session for the next week, what I’m doing, what weights, how much rest, what time etc. but every now and then I like to have a random session where I have no control over the plan and this week I did something which I have called a Press Up Run Challenge.

It’s simple in theory but the lack of control is a real mental test as well as physical.

Basic premise is after warming up run for an hour but every time you see someone approaching you then you have to perform Press Ups depending on what they are doing

Walking – 5 Press Ups

Walking a Dog – 10 Press Ups

Cycling – 15 Press Ups

Running – 20 Press Ups

I choose to run from our flat to Gloucester Park and back, I knew it would be a popular route. If you have 4 people running together then you have 80 Press Ups for example as well, this happened by the way! Now I have no idea of how many Press Ups I did but I think around 400. Would I plan to do a session with 400 Press Ups in usually - no lol.

But because I let go of control I did more Press Ups in 1 hour then I would ever think I could do.

The point is planning is great but sometimes you need some flexibility, plan to do something sure but sometimes you don’t have to plan everything.

I loved that session.
